There are now tougher consequences for Driving While Intoxicated with a child in the car. Senator Kemp Hannon (6th District) announced New York’s newest felony this week. Known as “Leandra’s Law,” named after an 11-year-old killed this year on her way to a sleepover, Albany passed legislation which mandates that a person caught Driving While Intoxicated with a child in the car will be sent to prison.
“I fully support this important legislation and I thank Senator Charles Fuschillo as well as the Governor for his support by signing this bill into law,” said Senator Hannon. “I also commend Lenny Rosado, Leandra’s father, for his courage, strength and fortitude in ensuring the safety of other children,” continued Hannon.
In addition to making it a felony in New York State to drive drunk with a child 15 years-old or younger in the car, this important legislation also requires the installation of ignition locks for any convicted drunk driver. The ignition locks prevent engines from starting until drivers blow into the alcohol detectors to prove they are sober.
