Senator Kemp Hannon
6th District New York
Remembering Pearl Harbor

FDR famously called it a “date which will live in infamy.”  Sixty-eight years later, veterans, elected officials, families and community members gathered at the American Air Power Museum at Republic Airport in Farmingdale to honor the local heroes who served at Pearl Harbor.

“The veterans at today’s commemorative memorial ceremony embody patriotism, courage and true heroism,” said Senator Kemp Hannon (6th Senate District), who spoke at the ceremony.  “It is a sincere privilege to be in their presence today, to honor them for their service to our nation and to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom on December 7, 1941,” Hannon continued.

Giant American flags hung from the ceiling of the American Air Power Museum during the event, as commemorative red roses lay on the table in front of the speaker podium.  The memorial ceremony included a “Presentation of Colors,” singing of the “Star Spangle Banner,” a blessing of the roses and a memorial bell ringing.  Military music was provided by the band of Massapequa High School.

Pearl Harbor survivors in attendance at the ceremony included Richard Abeles, Gerard Barbosa, Seymour Blutt, William Halleran, Michael Montelione and Andrew Terrono.

The ceremony was dedicated in the memory of William Vatter (Pearl Harbor veteran), Arthur Zaccaris (Pearl Harbor veteran), Bob Baranaskas (War Birds over LI) and Vinny Nasta (SKYTYPERS).

Widows in attendance included Irene Hagen, Joyce Tupper and Jean Izzo.
